Designed by Vico Magistretti in 1977 and awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979, Atollo 233 returns to the spotlight in two exhibitions dedicated to Italian design culture, from Oman to Gorizia.
Oluce continues to trace its place within Italian design culture through Atollo 233, the table lamp designed by Vico Magistretti in 1977 and awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. Reduced to three elementary geometries, cylinder, cone and hemisphere, Atollo remains one of the clearest expressions of Oluce’s way of thinking about light: formal, measured, and rooted in the relationship between object and space.
Starting from May 23rd, 2026, Atollo 233 has been on view in Oman as part of “1 to a Million. Italian Design Stories”, an exhibition dedicated to the Compasso d’Oro and to the projects that have contributed to defining the language of Italian design. Within this context, Atollo appears not only as an object from the archive, but as a design that still explains how proportion, reduction and luminous presence can give a lamp its lasting relevance.
At the end of June, Atollo 233 will also be included in “Italia Settanta. La creatività come antidoto. Arte Moda Design”, the exhibition hosted at Palazzo Attems Petzenstein in Gorizia. The show looks at the 1970s as a decisive moment for Italian visual culture, bringing together art, fashion and design to examine a decade shaped by research, experimentation and new formal languages.
Through these two exhibitions, Oluce confirms the continuity of a Milanese design house rooted in history and active in the present, with Atollo 233 as a precise example of how an essential form can continue to shape the way light inhabits an interior.
